The Vulcan Reporter spotted Javicia Leslie on the set of HBO Max's Titans. While highly unlikely there is a crossover, this could be a joint promotion for HBO Max.

J.J. Abrams' Company Working on Constantine Reboot For HBO Max

HBO Max is quickly building itself up as a new hub for a different variety of DC shows, with current shows such as Titans, Doom Patrol, and upcoming shows such as Green Lantern, and Peacemaker bringing a wider breadth of stories and genres to stories about superheroes and anti-heroes. Last year, we had learned that J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot would be producing a variety of series for HBO Max, including a Justice League Dark show. Now, we have learned that there is a Constantine reboot also being produced, with Guy Bolton set to write for the show.

While they have yet to cast any actor in the role, the show is looking to distance itself from NBC's Constantine, played by Matt Ryan, who eventually found his home in the Waverrider in Legends of Tomorrow. They are apparently seeking to cast a diverse lead to helm the show, with the idea that it will be a darker origin story of the titular character as a young man in London. The pilot script is already written, and a writer's room for the show is planned to open next month.

For better and worse, representation is the name of the game for the industry. When I see it done as pandering, it can annoy me. I do, however, understand the good intentions behind it. In the end, as long as the actor does a good job, it's not a deal-breaker for me.

What troubles me more is that a lot of what I enjoy about Constantine is that he comes in already damaged--with a troubled, mysterious past baked in. Exploring that past it fun, but an entire series based on it seems kind of unnecessary, like the Solo movie was for Han Solo's character.

Now, I kinda liked Solo, but the concept of "Young Constantine" isn't grabbing me out of the gate.

Will this Constantine be a spinoff from Abrams' upcoming Justice League Dark?

The rumor mill suggests Riz Ahmed may be approached to play him.

I have to say, I "normally" do not like it when they ignore source material and make major changes, including race, to beloved characters. It's an insult to fans. People call it "whitewashing" when they cast a white actor in a non white role and I agree, IT IS WHITEWASHING! But, it's called "diversity"when they cast a white character with a non white actor. I don't agree. This is a double standard disguised as racial parity.

However, DC has the multiverse. The characters can vary slightly or vary greatly in this unique setting. I think Ahmed, if they are actually looking at him and if he is interested, would be a fantastic Constantine. He is an award winning actor, singer and advocate. He is certainly up to the challenge.

I look forward to seeing what Abrams accomplishes with the franchise.

The great thing is, Matt Ryan's Constantine can still exist in the DC Multiverse and Legends was renewed for season 7 ahead of its season 6 run.
