Oswald Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin, has been a constant thorn in Batman's side for countless years. Appearing in various forms of media with actors such as Danny DeVito, Paul Williams, and Robin Lord Taylor portraying the iconic supervillain, the Penguin may be getting his chance to shine in the spotlight soon in his very own series.
Deadline reports that a spin-off series centering around The Batman’s take on the Penguin is in the works at HBO Max. The movie’s director, Matt Reeves, and Dylan Clark will be producing the project, while Lauren LeFranc has been hired as the showrunner. Colin Farrell has also been approached to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot for the series, but has yet to accept any offer. The show is said to be along the lines of Scarface, and will showcase the origins of Oswald Cobblepot and his rise in the underworld.
The Penguin joins the upcoming HBO Max series, Gotham PD, which is also set in The Batman universe. Focused on the officials in the Gotham Police Department, the series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the menagerie of complex characters in Gotham’s police force. It is designed to build upon the film’s examination of the high amount of corruption in Gotham City while also launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.
