HBO Max has recently announced three new DC related shows, Strange Adventures, Green Lantern Corps, and the now completed season one of Watchmen. Of course, if you are a DC Universe fan, you are looking forward to Stargirl, more new episodes of Harley Quinn, and the eventual release of Young Justice season 4, not to mention the new Bizarro TV being developed currently. However, the original DC based tv network, or at least the network that has dominated the last decade of DC Comics based shows, is The CW. Two new shows are in development there. A continuation of Arrow via the Green Arrow and The Canaries, and, Superman and Lois!
Tyler Hoechlin, the actor who plays the Arrowverse's Superman has brought something special to the television screen. We've seen him take on the cape since episode one of Supergirl season 2. Hoechlin's Superman is widely regarded as a perfect homage to the late Christopher Reeve portrayal. When he is on screen he demands respect with his power and his previous accomplishments, but he is quick to give the spotlight to any other character that deserves it. He is humble, he has been defeated, but he has prevailed, so it's no wonder that The CW, who has played with this character consistently for three years within a variety of their shows, is now considering giving Superman, and his better half Lois, their own show!
When it comes to pilot season, we are in the golden timeframe for making a new show. Creating a new show is very different than starting a new season. A new show is tasked with a very different and difficult task, "world-building". Every pilot goes into their filming with the notion that they will be picked up for at least 8-13 episodes. That means, sets need to be made, costumes need to be duplicated as well as created, and the fiction being told needs to become believable. All of that needs to be written and a "hook" needs to be set to bring the viewer back for at least a few more if not a season's-worth of episodes.
Today, it seems that "Superman and Lois", if this is the end name of this new show, is still seeking two teen actors to be added to their cast! Much of the Arrowverse's content comes from previous comic book epic stories. So, when we hear that Superman and Lois is seeking teen male actors, we can't help be be curious if this is an adaptation of Jonathan Kent & Damian Wayne. In the comics, there is an age acceleration event that ages Jonathan to a teen. With Batman missing, at least on Earth 1 and Batwoman taking the mantle, it is conceivable that Bruce would turn to his good friend Clark, to help raise his troublesome son.
So much of this will depend on the outcome of The CW's Crisis On Infinite Earths. Stay with us and stay tuned, as we start to uncover how this new Arrowverse show will integrate into a much larger DC TV based Universe!
