The upcoming HBO Max spin-off series to Matt Reeves’ The Batman has apparently “evolved” into something completely different.
According to Matt Reeves on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the spin-off series that was meant to center around a corrupt cop in Gotham's police department has shifted in a brand new direction. The show was intended to be set during Batman's first year of being a crime-fighter, and even brought on Joe Barton as the showrunner for the potential project. However, creative differences with HBO Max have caused a new project to arise from the ashes of this original plan.
The show has now shifted in direction, with it becoming centered on The Batman’s depiction of Arkham Asylum, and has been described as reminiscent of a horror movie. The project has also experienced a change in chronology, being re-positioned as taking place after the events of The Batman as opposed to being set a year prior. On centering the series around Arkham, Reeves stated, "I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You go into this environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh".
At the current moment, the “Gotham PD” project has been placed on an indefinite hold, but Matt Reeves hasn't completely ruled it out ever coming to fruition down the line.
